OLD LANGFORD

We have a number of old photos of Langford, its people and its activities. They provide a fascinating insight into what Langford was like, and how things have changed, over the last 100 years. Our aim is, over time, to publish them on the village website to form an archive anybody can readily access.

Old Langford Archive

Stan Kibble and his team of 3 in the 1940s. Ella, his wife, took Stan's lunch and her camera to take this magnificent picture. "Gramps" Kibble was a shepherd who came to Langford after the Great War. Three of his sons, Jack, Stan and Les worked at Rectory Farm. Stan and Ella lived at Leys View, and Stan died only recently aged 100.

Mr Reeves and Lily Jones at harvest time, with a load ready to return to the farm for rick building. Mr Reeves lived at Threeways and had the farm yard where Hardy's Barn now is. Lily stayed at the farm when visiting from London - she was a cousin of Freddie Jones at Wellbank Cottages

Photo taken at Lower Farm (where the Templemans live now) just after the Second World War. Amelia Peckett came to Langford as a wartime Land Army girl, and stayed on after the war working for Mr Hook.

A picnic at the Colston Tennis Club in the late 1920s – mainly members of the Moreing family. Standing far left is Mrs Mitchell, widow of Thomas Mitchell who fell at the Somme; she never remarried and lived in the middle Garden Cottage, earning her living as a dressmaker.

The Langford and Filkins Band lead the village to the fete in about 1950 – the fete then was held at Lower Farm. In the 1960s the fete location switched to Pember House.

The pitch was in the first field on the left going towards broadwell - just before the bridge (still called the "Football Field"). I expect some of you, like me, can recognise many of the players
