Helping Moldova to help displaced Ukrainian people fleeing the war in Ukraine
The Carterton Aid Drop-Off Centre have been extremely successful in their efforts to collect aid for Ukrainian refugees. The volunteers, with massive assistance from RAF Brize Norton personnel, now have over 2000 boxes sorted, packed and ready to go. They could fill more than ten 40ft trailers but their main “stumbling block” is transport. To date they have only been able to obtain the services of a returning Ukrainian driver and his lorry taking one load into Ukraine. He is taking the aid directly into Lviv, his family’s city, which is currently under bombardment. This will be his only aid journey as he will then be enlisting to fight in the defence of his city in the hope of protecting his family and others there.
Over the last week we, Kev Ball (Broadwell) and Dennis Evans (Langford), have been trying to source logistic capability to move some of the donations, especially the “high need” items. We have managed to acquire the use of two Long Wheel Base vans from MAN UK for a months duration at no cost.
The desired destination for the “high need” aid is Moldova, a poor country who’s population, it is reported, has increased by 20% with the influx of refugees.
Here’s the punch line, the estimated cost for one van to Moldova return is circa £1500 so £3000 for two vans per trip. Working in conjunction with the Carterton Drop-Off Centre and the RAF Volunteers, we hope to do six deliveries in the four week loan period, meaning that a fund of around £18,000 is required to achieve this aim.
